The Microcentro area is not a neighbourhood, but rather it’s considered the financial centre of the city. Most of its buildings are banks, office spaces or state buildings, like ‘Casa Rosada’ or Pink House.
This area is located in Puerto Madero neighbourhood, one of the safest to visit while in Buenos Aires.
There are many tourist attractions to see like Plaza de Mayo, Plaza de las Luces, the Pink House, el Cabildo and Museo de la Ciudad.
Safest places to visit in Microcentro, Buenos Aires
Due to its functionality as a business area, very few people actually live there. It’s estimated that around 4 million people travel there everyday for work.
It’s recommended to book a tour to see all the main attractions or you can also book a hop on-hop off bus tour to see Microcentro from the bus.
Remember that in all these areas you should take the regular precautions you do when visiting touristic places.
Places to avoid in Microcentro
There aren’t many places to avoid in Microcentro but there are times. It’s very crowded during working hours and a bit into the night.
On Corrientes avenue you’ll see many theatres and restaurants, pizzerias and cafés with loads of people, but everything closes at night. So it’s advisable to avoid walking around after the theatres and restaurants close since the area is deserted.
And I would personally recommend not to stay in this area to avoid walking to and from your hotel late at night. There are other nicer places like Belgrano, Recoleta or San Telmo 👈 click on the words to read more about them!
When visiting a place like Microcentro where there are thousands of people, workers and tourists alike, you should:
- Avoid streets where are the protests happening
- Keep your belongings safe.
- Use the digital devices you need for the day before you go out for the day (for example phone, avoid bringing expensive devices)
- Be mindful if you have an expensive camera and want to take photos of the city
- Visit touristic areas, like Caminito, during the day when there are more people and places are open.
You shouldn’t:
- Walk after 10 pm.
- Wear expensive jewellery.
- Walk looking at your phone all the time.
- Leave your personal objects on the table, especially if you need to use the restroom.
Final thoughts
Your stay in the centre of Buenos Aires should pass without any problems. It might be better to visit during the day however and stay in Palermo or Recoleta.
