Where to get a Sim Card in Buenos Aires?

There are two main possibilities when you want to get a sim card in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

You can get a local sim card from the Claro, Personal or Moviestar networks from their stores. You can also get an eSim which is basically software that allows you to connect to a local network.

Esim vs Regular Sim in Argentina

Let us discuss the differences between an eSim and a regular sim so that you know which one is better for your trip to Argentina.

Personally, I prefer less hassle when I am traveling so I choose the eSim option. I have had many difficult experiences trying to set up sim cards in multiple countries(I was shouted at for my mistake by a member of staff in Greece!) and prefer dealing with technology.

If you find new technology difficult and often need help then maybe a physical sim card is for you but remember you will have to speak to someone who may not speak English very well.

Esims

Two of the biggest players in the eSim market are Airalo and Holafly. I choose Airalo because it was recommended to me by a friend.

Airalo

Airalo offers two options for people traveling to Argentina. You can choose 1GB of internet for 7 days for $6.50 or 3GB of internet for 30 days for $13. The Airalo eSim will allow you to connect to the Personal network.

Holafy

Holafy is a lot more expensive but you get more internet for your money. You can buy a package for $44 for 15 days for 6GB of data. This package could be for you if you need to use a lot of internet.

Compatibility of eSims

It is important to note that not all phones are compatible with eSims. In general modern more recent phones are ok but older phones may not work. Apple, Google and Samsung. If you want to check if your android phone is allowed to use eSIms you can dial *#06# and press call. If you see an EID number there, your phone should be compatible.

Regular sims

If you prefer to get a physical sim card, you can visit any store of a local network and get a sim card there. You need to provide your passport as identification.

The main networks are Claro, Personal, and Moviestar. They all provide coverage throughout the country which is handy if you decide to leave Buenos Aires for another place in Argentina.

You will need to go to the mobile provider store to set up your prepaid sim card as a tourist. You can buy a sim card from other shops for 50 pesos but I recommend that you go to the network provider so you can get your credit too.

Claro

There are many Claro stores in Buenos Aires including in Recoleta and Downtown on Avenida de Mayo. You should ask for the tourist prepaid card which currently costs 2,700 pesos($21) but prices change quickly in Argentina. You get 25GB for 30 days for this price.

Personal

You can buy a Personal sim card in any of their stores in Puerto Madero and in Palermo. They also offer a prepaid card for tourists. They charge 800 pesos($6) for 30 days with 3GB of data and 30 minutes of international calls.

Moviestar

Movistar also offers a tourist prepaid card and offer two packages. You can get 2GB for 7 days for 230 pesos($2) or 3GB for 30 days for 550 pesos($4). You can find a moviestar store in Palermo and there are also many options downtown.

Wifi in Buenos Aires

There are also many places to connect to wifi in Buenos Aires including parks, cafes, restaurants, and bars. You can also download the app “BA Wifi” to get free wifi around the city.

Final Thoughts

Your decision on whether you want an eSim or a regular sim card depends on the hassle that you are willing to go through. If you have a modern phone, then I recommend getting an eSIm and if you have an older phone and don’t mind talking to a seller, then I recommend getting a regular physical sim card.
