In this article I’ll share my opinion and advice to choose when is the best time to visit Buenos Aires for you.
If you want to escape the winter months of the Northern hemisphere, the best months are between November and March. However, if you don’t like the heat, then the best months are between May and October.
Weather in Buenos aires
Buenos Aires is characterised by having four seasons relatively marked with spring starting in September. There is even a ‘Spring Day’ which is on 21st September.
On this day children have celebrations at school, young people meet at parks and this day also coincides with teacher’s day.
The weather it’s basically the opposite of the Northern hemisphere. Around Christmas time the average temperature is around 30°/35° Celsius – 86°/95° Fahrenheit.
The warmest month in Buenos Aires is January, with an average temperature of 30.9°C / 87.62° F. On the other hand, the coldest month is July, when the temperature reaches a high 14°C / 57.2° F and a low 5°C / 41° F.
During the summer months of December, January and February, there might be heat waves, with January being the month with the highest amount of heat waves recorded by the National Weather Forecast Service.
In the graph below, you can compare the highest temperature, the lowest temperature and the rains:

Humidity in Buenos Aires
The month with the most humidity is May around 76% and January with 56% is the month on the lowest end.
If you don’t tolerate humid weather my advice is to avoid coming here in autumn and winter, from March until August. Although as you can see from the numbers above, summer days can sometimes be humid too, but being summer you can spend the day in a swimming pool or go to the beach!
What is the weather like in Buenos Aires in December?
If you are planning to avoid the winter time at home and want to travel to a warmer country, this is your time! And you’ll also get to experience a warm Christmas in a Latin American country!
In the graph below, you can see the highest temperature for the months of December and January.

What is the weather like in Buenos Aires in January?
The month of January is the peak of the summer holiday season. People from the capital and Greater Buenos Aires, escape the heat from the city to go to the beach or visit other provinces.
It’s a great month to visit Buenos Aires if you want to avoid traffic and crowds because everybody is on holiday and schools are closed until mid-February.
On the other hand, it can be too hot if you want to explore the city on foot or by bus!
I visited Buenos Aires in the summer of 2019 and many places were closed in the city because of the holidays, so if you book a place with a swimming pool or if you decide to go to the beach, you’ll be fine!
I’m in Buenos Aires at the moment and it’s winter. And even though it’s cold, with temperatures around 15°- 18°C / 59°- 64°F, I think it’s also a good time because everything is open!
You can go to places on foot, take the public transport or have coffees and meals inside or outdoors with the heaters that all the restaurants provide for customers.
We had a lovely dinner sitting outdoors and it didn’t feel cold! We went to “La Pescadorita” in Palermo in case you fancy fresh fish dishes.
When is the best time to visit La Patagonia
The best time to go to Patagonia is in the Spring or Summer(September-March). It can be very windy during these months but the main reason that it is the best time to visit is that you can spend more time hiking.
We went on a long hike starting from El Chaltén and we wouldn’t have been able to do it in winter because there wouldn’t have been enough daylight.
I have to say, the wind did start bothering me after a few weeks in El Calafate but it is still better to go during the summer season as locals told me that many things shut down in the winter season in Patagonia.
If you do visit Patagonia in winter, you can benefit from getting away from the crowds and getting some good value deals.
Best time to visit Buenos Aires
As you can see from all the information shared in this post, Buenos Aires has a hot summer season and a relatively cold winter one.
It all depends on what weather suits you best and the activities you want to do in Buenos Aires.
My opinion is that when packing for summer, make sure you also bring a light jacket or cardigan as it might get a bit cold at night.
If you visit Buenos Aires in winter, bring warm clothes, and try to wear layers in case the weather changes abruptly (it can happen!)
