So you want to escape the cold winter in Europe or North America…..
Well, South America is a great place to work remotely and has really come along as a place where digital nomads spend a few months of the year. Remember, South America is huge, so think about the type of place you want to spend a few months.
Do you want to live in a lively city with plenty of culture or would you prefer a laid-back atmosphere of a beach town in Brazil? The choice is all yours but here are a few of our favorite spots.
- Buenos Aires, Argentina
Buenos Aires is a really happening spot in the digital nomad community and is regularly rated as the number one place for digital nomads to spend some time(especially in northern hemisphere winter).

The city has so much to offer and that is why we shared our top 50 things to do in Buenos Aires. There is also a lively nightlife and all of the restaurants, bars and cafés you will need to have a great time.
Read our working remotely guide to Argentina here.
- Praia da Pipa, Brazil
Praia da Pipa is a small beach town in the North-East of Brazil and it is popular with surfers and digital nomads. It is situated near the city of Natal so you will probably need to fly into Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro and take another connecting flight to Natal.
Pipa is a beautiful little town that has great weather all year round. Choose Pipa if you want to spend a few months by the beach learning how to surf (or kitesurf) and exploring this part of Brazil(Check out Jericoacoara and Lencois Maranhenses)
- Medellín, Colombia
Medellín has been attracting people for some time now and developing a reputation as a great place to live. Medillín is a fun place to live and there is plenty to do and lots of cafés and co-working spaces.
One of the great things about Medellín is that there are plenty of like-minded digital nomads there and you can work remotely for a U.S company as the time-zones are similar. You do need to be careful at night though.
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and a great place to spend a few months working remotely. The city has a lot going on especially during carnaval which happens every February/March.
I would recommend staying in Ipanema or Botofogo but unfortunately most of Rio is not the safest place to visit. If you are worried about safety, you can head to Paraty or Cabo Frio which are smaller towns but still have some things to do.
- Cuenca, Ecuador
Cuenca is a city in the southern Andes so it is a bit different to our other picks. I would say Cuenca is a great place to get some work done during the week and then head out for some fantastic hikes at the weekend.
There are plenty of coworking spaces and be sure to check out IMPAQTO Coworking. The city is definitely safer than other picks on our list like Medellín or Rio de Janeiro.
