Is Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires safe?

Puerto Madero is one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in the city of Buenos Aires. It’s located by de la Plata River and it’s perfect for a walk on the promenade overlooking the river or to sit and relax in one of its many restaurants. 

This area is relatively safe. Keep in mind that it’s an expensive neighbourhood where the cost of living and prices are much higher than other areas. 

Safest places to visit in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires

It’s considered one of the safest neighbourhoods in the city, as you can see on the map below, the crime rate percentage is very low compared to other areas in the city. 

While in Puerto Madero you can: 

  • Walk along the ‘Puente de la Mujer’ bridge by Santiago Calatrava 
  • Visit old ships lie ‘Fragata Sarmiento’
  • Go to ‘Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur’, it’s a 350 hectare ecological reserve just a few blocks away from the city centre

In all these areas you should take the regular precautions you take when visiting touristic places.

Places to avoid in Puerto Madero

When visiting or walking around Puerto Madero it’s advisable to  be more careful near Avenida España (avenue) towards the south (1800) since it’s close to a ‘villa’. These are communities of people who have very little resources and they have settled together and made buildings.

In Puerto Madero, however, the local government is working with the neighbors of this area to work together in order to improve living conditions and safety. 

All in all, Puerto Madero is a safe place to visit in Buenos Aires City and highly recommended.
