Choosing a place to stay in Buenos Aires can be tricky as there are quite a few neighborhoods that you can choose that will give you a different experience. If you only have a few days in Buenos Aires, then I recommend staying in the city center but if you have time you might want to live near the nightlife and parks of Palermo.

As a tourist, you will probably want to do a few tours and the good thing is that most tours will pick you up at your hotel. You will also want to know which areas are safe in the city and you can read our guide about safety in Buenos Aires here.

Let’s look at some neighborhoods to spend time in Buenos Aires as a tourist.

Neighborhoods for Tourists in Buenos Aires

▪️ City Center

The City Center is probably the best place to stay as a tourist as you are close to all of the main attractions. We recommend that you stay at the Marriott Hotel in the city center as it is the hotel with the best location in Buenos Aires.

In the City Center (Microcentro) you’ll find the widest avenue (9 de Julio), Colón Theatre, the Pink House, the Obelisk, Corrientes avenue, Palacio Barolo and Tortoni Cafe.

If you are visiting Buenos Aires for a couple of days you can choose to stay in this area and you’ll have everything you need to see from Buenos Aires.

▪️ San Telmo

San Telmo is the oldest neighborhood in Buenos Aires and has plenty of things to do and places to explore. San Telmo is well located near the center of the city. We recommend staying at the L’Adresse Hotel Boutique for the best location close to the city center and La Boca.

You should spend time exploring San Telmo if you want to see some of the historic sites of Buenos Aires and also the famous market at the weekend.

▪️ Palermo

Palermo is the largest district in Buenos Aires and is a great place to stay if you are interested in art, parks, and food!

You won’t be disappointed with your stay in Palermo and I recommend staying here especially if you plan on staying 3 months in Buenos Aires. The only downside is that it is a little further from touristic activities.

Other Interesting Neighborhoods for Tourists

▪️ Recoleta

Recoleta is a very interesting place to visit in Buenos Aires as it is in between Palermo and the city center. There are lovely parks and Museums and of course, the very famous Recoleta Cemetery which is a must-visit in Buenos Aires.

▪️ La Boca

La Boca also has interesting things to do for tourists. “El Caminto” is a lovely place to walk and go shopping. There is also the football stadium of the famous team “Boca Juniors”.

▪️ Tigre

Tigre is a small town to the north of Buenos Aires (40kms). It serves as the gateway to a delta of scenic islands and waterways. Tigre is great for a day trip to visit the town and the artisan market or stay overnight and explore further with a boat trip.

The boat trip lasts around one hour and you travel along 5 of the delta rivers. You get a coffee and some cake and get a guide to explain some of the local history. You can also book a longer 5-hour boat trip here.
