Palermo or Recoleta – Where to stay in Buenos Aires

If given the choice between Palermo or Recoleta to stay in Buenos Aires, then I personally would choose to stay in Palermo. Palermo has fantastic places to eat and drink and amazing parks to go for a walk.

I would only choose Recoleta over Palermo if I were only in Buenos Aires for a few days and I wanted to see as much as I can of the main attractions as Recoleta is closer to the city center than Palermo

Honestly, there isn’t a big difference between staying in either Palermo or Recoleta as they are right next to each and it won’t by any means ruin your trip if you chose the “wrong” neighborhood.

Our 3-day itinerary is suitable for people staying in either Palermo or Recoleta.

Palermo/Recoleta difference

Having stayed in both Palermo and Recoleta, I can say that both Palermo and Recoleta are great places to stay. Last time we stayed near the botanic gardens in Palermo and this really is an excellent location as you can easily catch a bus into the center and enjoy everything that Palermo has to offer.

Palermo has more of a young, hipster vibe but it also has places where families come to eat out. Recoleta is for people a little bit older, richer people who also want to be closer to downtown.

If you are a foodie or into nightlife then Palermo is the choice for you. Coffee is actually a good measure to show the difference between the neighborhoods. In Palermo, you will find many modern cafés that serve specialty coffee and in Recoleta, they have more of the traditional Buenos Aires style café.

Palermo

Palermo is the largest district in Buenos Aires and is a great place to stay if you are interested in art, parks, and food!

You won’t be disappointed with your stay in Palermo and I recommend staying here especially if you plan on staying 3 months in Buenos Aires. The only downside is that it is a little further from touristic activities.

Recoleta

Recoleta is a very interesting place to visit in Buenos Aires as it is in between Palermo and the city center. There are lovely parks and Museums and the very famous Recoleta Cemetery, which is a must-visit in Buenos Aires.
