There is no direct train that goes from Buenos Aires to Patagonia. If you want to travel from Buenos Aires to Patagonia, then I highly recommend flying as the bus will simply take too long.
Argentina is a huge country so keep that in mind. If you want to take land transport to see nature, then I recommend the bus from El Calafate to El Chaltén
Flying from Buenos Aires to Patagonia
Flying to Patagonia from Buenos Aires is definitely the best option. I know how you might feel that it would be better to travel over land so you can see more but the bus or hitchhiking is only for people who have more time on their hands.
You will probably fly from Buenos AIres to the following destinations:
- Buenos Aires to Bariloche
- Buenos Aires to El Calafate
- Buenos Aires to El Chalten
- Buenos Aires to Ushuaia
The Bus from Buenos Aires to Patagonia
The bus is possible to get from Buenos Aires to Patagonia but it is so long that it really isn’t a good option. Your best bet is to fly to one of the towns above and then you can take a bus around Patagonia if you want to travel around by bus
Bus from El calafate to El chaltén
If you want to take a bus in Patagonia then I recommend this bus. The landscape looking out the window is phenomenal. You can book this tour if you only want to do one day and head back to El Calafate.
If you are into hiking, I recommend spending more time in El Chaltén as the hikes there are incredible. You can be more flexible and book your bus from this website: Taqsa
Renting a car
Renting a car is a great idea if you want to explore by yourself. I would recommend flying from Buenos Aires to either El Calafate or El Chaltén and renting a car from there. Our recommendation to rent a car is with rentalcars.com.
Trains in Patagonia
There aren’t really any trains in Patagonia though that would be fantastic. There are tourist/historic trains in El Maitén (You can find more information about la trochita here) and another one in Usuahia (El Tren del Fin del Mundo)
